So yeah, things have been a bit nutty lately, hence the no updating. Well, that, and
somebody showed me
Kingdom of Loathing, an absurdly amusing and geeksome online RPG thingy that's been occupying a good chunck of my online time. It'll probably be another couple of weeks before I can sit down and type up the myriad of stuff that's been going on, including the goings on with my dad (and other family members), that which I have been doing for work, and The Great March Westward with
adrith and the Long Quick Drive Home.
However, in the great mire of stress that is my life, there was a bit of a shining moment yesterday afternoon; after driving my mom around to do a couple of errands, we were in the neighborhood of my grandmother's nursing home, so I suggested we stop in to say 'hi'. Mom's usually really good about getting up to see her mother at least once a week, but due to the aforementioned goings on with father, the visits to the nursing home have been back-burnered. Yesterday was unusually warm for May, so we took Gram out in to the little courtyard that's between a couple of buildings. Some ice cream cones were obtained, and we sat outside and had a good conversation. It's worth noting here that my grandmother has dementia and most likely Alzheimer's, so a large part of the conversation involves going over the same material several times; stuff like "What day is it?". If you don't let it frustrate you, it's actually kind of amusing. Besides, if you don't laugh at it, it can depress the crud out of you. In some ways it's kind of like talking to a little kid who happens to have 85 years of wisdom on an unconscious level. So I'm often asked about how things work, since, according to my grandmother, I "know everything", and yesterday was no different. The exchange went like this:
Gram: "Every now and then a nice breeze comes up. What makes a breeze happen?"
Me (deadpan): "Oh, it's just from the trees flapping really hard."
Hilarity ensued. We all had a good long laugh at an off-hand misexplanation that would be fit for a four-year-old.
Yeah, it's probably not nearly as funny to anybody else after all the setup and explanation, but I thought it was worth writing down, so there it is.
